Getting to know Matt Somma….
Where are you from? A lot of places
What’s your day job? Designer at an architectural firm
How long have you been creating art? I’ve been creating art since elementary school. I didn’t take it seriously until after high school.
Did you study art in school/college? I attended the Art Institute in Pittsburgh to sharpen my skills and build my portfolio. That step got me into The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and I graduated with a Bachelor of Art in Illustration with distinction.
What is your favorite thing about being a member at The Soundry? The best part of being a member of The Soundry is hard to pinpoint. If I had to narrow it down to one thing, it’s the ability to work on larger pieces because of the generous size of the studio. That was the original reason I joined. The space, the atmosphere, and the coffee really help to foster creativity.
What kind of art do you do? I do oil painting mostly. Some call it surreal, some don’t know what to call it, I really don’t know what others want to title my style, I just paint what I dream up and hope I do it well.
Who is your favorite artist? Or, where do you draw your inspiration? The list is long: NC Wyeth, Howard Pyle, Hal Foster, JM Whistler, George Inness, Lucien Frued, Andrew Wyeth, John Sloan, Thomas Eakins, Wayne Thiebaud, Richard Bunkall, Steve Huston, Michael Hussar, Edward Hopper, Mark Ryden , Dave Cooper, Scott Musgrove, Bob Dob, Malcolm Liepke, Diane Arbus, JC Leyendecker, Jasper Johns, Andrew Loomis, Granville Redmond, …etc etc etc
