Gallery & Studio

Gallery

The gallery at The Soundry occupies about one quarter of our total space. It’s a rough-around-the-edges kind of space with good lighting and comfortable seating. We hang our member’s artwork in this area and offer it for sale. This is the place to go in Vienna if you’re looking for work from emerging local artists, or if you just want to kick back, sip a latte, and take in some new sights.

The artwork in the gallery changes regularly, and with our shows as well, so no matter how often you vist you’ll find something interesting or thought provoding that you haven’t seen before. A large portion of our gallery space is set aside for installation works.

The garage atmosphere and undergound, working-studio feel give visitors an experience they’re guaranteed not to find anywhere in the region.

Studio

Soundry members have open access to our large shared studio space. The room is roughly 80′ long and 25′ wide, has a drinking fountain, mop/utility sink, and adjacent restrooms. The coffee shop is also right around the corner, so you’re never too far from a little caffeinated inspiration.

The studio space is dynamic because it’s shared — you never know exactly what will be going on, but there is ample room to carve out your own workspace. Soundry staff are on the premises at all times and we can always quickly reconfigure things accomodate various needs. The metal poles you see in the photo are one of our favorite things — we use them to quickly set up easels, tables, and display areas.

For projects that require a little more isolation, we have several small rooms available adjacent to our rehearsal room, and we often use our flex studio/classroom. The idea is to help you be productive, so if you need something feel free to let us know.

Shared resources at The Soundry are easily recognizable by a swatch of pink paint. We have a four-color, two station screen printing press that is available for use (after some orientation) by our members. That, paired with our flash dryer, is one great example of the benefits of working in a big space shared by a community of artists. Do you have designs that you’d like to print but not (yet) the know-how or elbow-room to get it done? Other Soundry members are available to provide instruction to help you move forward with that project!

The Studio is open from 10am to 1am daily.

Flex Studio

Adjacent to our gallery is a room that was formerly used to paint cars. It’s a unique space with lighting that is uncommon and surprisingly useful. With no drapes it produces an evenly lit space with very few shadows. By lowering drapes we can backlight an artist’s workspace (as we do during our figure drawing sessions).

We keep this space flexible because of it’s unique characteristics. To date it’s hosted many classes, figure drawing sessions, photography shoots, and big painting projects.

i am interested in a studio space but I am concerned about sharing it. I am concerned because I tend to work on a large scale and there is a lot of woodworking involved. How is the ventilation in the studio space and how do fellow artists/studio owners feel about woodworking tools such as a jigsaw etc?

  2. Hi Colleen,
Because the studio is open and shared, some work is not suitable for the environment. The saw dust could be an issue, particularly if you are working large. It sounds like you need a wood working studio co-op. I have heard of one in Arlington, but the name escapes me. Hopefully, a Google search can bring it up for you. Best of luck!

  3. I am interested in a space to carve out some prints(MDF board..and linoleum). I am not concerned at all out sharing. I am trying to do pieces ranging from 3″x5″ to 32″x40″. I have 3 roommates and no room (or appreciation of art outside of whatever Ann Taylor they saw it in …that’s a whole other story). Anyway, I am having a Senior Exhibition in December and not doing nearly as much as I should. I commute to Vienna for work and find it hard to commute back to DC and work on art. It would be greatly appreciated if some one would contact me or I can come by to see how much it would be to “acquire” a corner of studio space??
